I was able to identify this photo of Franklin Square in Norwich, CT, using high magnification to read signage visible on the buildings. After doing a little research into the location, I learned the street cars were introduced in 1892. This photo was also taken before the building at 4 Broadway (currently home to Castle Church) was built in 1894.

The Wauregan Hotel, the tall building in the center of the image, was built around 1855 and may be seen in this postcard (ca. 1911) with it’s painted signage.
CURRENT VIEW

This Google image capture is from July 2024. It faces West from Main Street, just approaching the traffic circle. With the exception of the Wauregan (25 Broadway) and the building located just to the right of the flag pole (214-218 Main Street), it appears all the buildings in the 1892-1893 photo are either no longer standing, or they’ve been altered beyond recognition.
